Every Dental Emergency is Different – This Is Why

In short, there are multiple factors that need to be considered – from the type of dental injury and the severity of the damage to the treatment needed. That’s why we can’t provide you with an estimate of the cost here; you’ll need to consult Dr. Samia so he can narrow down your expenses. From there, our team will help you navigate the financial side of your care by reviewing our affordable payment options and answering any questions you have about the price.
Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Emergencies?

You might be surprised, but many dental insurance providers DO cover a portion of the cost. In fact, they may cover upwards of 80% of the cost of the restorative care you need! So, it’s definitely worth taking a look at your plan to familiarize yourself with your benefits.
Need help understanding and utilizing your coverage? Good news: we work with many of the nation’s leading providers, including Ameritas, Cigna, MetLife, Delta Dental, and United Healthcare. We’d be happy to take a look at your plan, provide you with an estimate of your out-of-pocket expenses, and even handle the paperwork!

How Taking Care Of Your Smile Can Save You Money

Unfortunately, cavities, gum disease, and other common oral health problems don’t get better with time. Quite the opposite: they get worse, wreaking havoc on the look, health, and function of your smile in the process. For this reason, it’s crucial that you call us when you first notice that something is wrong – whether it’s pain when biting down or persistent sensitivity. The earlier we can intervene, the more likely it is we will be able to treat the root of the problem without extensive or costly care.
How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

Though you can’t always stop them, you can reduce your risk of having dental emergencies. Simply use the following tips and tricks:
- Brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
- At least once a day, floss between your teeth.
- See your dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups.
- Always wear an athletic mouthguard when you play sports.
- Don’t use your teeth as tools; use the appropriate equipment.
Dental Emergency FAQs
Will a Toothache Go Away on Its Own?
Toothaches generally do not go away on their own. Thus, we recommend you schedule a checkup with Dr. Samia to make sure nothing is wrong. There are many possible causes for toothache, and you’ll want to rule them out as soon as possible. This can help prevent problems from becoming more serious.
Sometimes, toothaches are just pain surrounding the tooth (not inside) and may go away on their own, such as if they are caused by gum irritation.
Can I Pop a Dental Abscess on My Own?
Never under any circumstances should you ever attempt to pop a dental abscess on your own! Always contact Dr. Samia first, as gum and tooth abscesses are considered a dental infection and an urgent emergency.
Popping an abscess can allow the bacteria to spread and cause further irritation. It can also expose your mouth to more bacteria and irritate the area further. Furthermore, delaying treatment can allow the infection to spread throughout the neck, throat, and head.
Can a Chipped Tooth Repair on Its Own?
Though tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, it cannot heal itself. This means that when you chip a tooth, no matter how minor or severe, it will not grow back.
In some cases, a tooth can remineralize, but this is not the same as it growing back. The only way to restore damaged enamel is with the help of restorative or cosmetic dentistry.
Should You Put a Knocked-Out Tooth in Water?
No. You can rinse off a knocked-out tooth with water, but you should never store it in water. Water can damage the root surface cells of the tooth, which will lessen its chances of being able to be reimplanted in the socket.
Instead, try to place the tooth back in the open socket until you can see Dr. Samia, and then call the office immediately. You can also store it in milk, saline solution, or an ADA approved tooth preservation kit. Please be aware that your tooth begins to die about 15 minutes after it comes out, so acting urgently is important if you want to save it.
